Description

The collection contains letters, diaries, notebooks, typescripts, drawings and clippings, the bulk consisting of drafts of articles and stories based on travels in Central and South America, submitted to the Christian Science monitor and other national newspapers and magazines. Her success as a free-lance writer and her social contacts, to some extent, are documented in the correspondence file, 1922-1976. A major unpublished manuscript, entitled "Without a man," records her motor tour of South America, 1946-7, the first undertaken by unescorted women. Miss Lyford was a sensitive observer and wrote in a positive, informed way about foreign cultures. Many naive sketches and watercolors illustrating her travels are also contained here. Few papers of a strictly personal nature are found in the collection. Rather, her writings illuminate favorite topics and concerns: holiday celebrations around the world, patterns of folk-life in developing nations, the process of intercultural exchange and the achievements of women in the Third World. Other writings include stories for children, pieces of local or historical interest, poems and translations from the Portuguese.
